Ottawa Municipal Candidates Round-up

Besides Jim Watson, likely to elected as Mayor of Ottawa today, there are many municipal candidates in the Ottawa area who have connections to other levels of government and party politics.

*Rod Vanier is running in ward 9 (Knoxdale-Merivale). He ran provincially for the Liberals in Nepean-Carleton in 2003, losing to John Baird. Previously he had been the federal Liberal president in the riding.

*Service Canada employee Dan Boudria is a Catholic school board trustee and son of former cabinet minister Don Boudria. After losing in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in 2008 he was rumoured to be interested in the nomination again but did not enter the race for next time and is stepping up for another term on school board.

*Incumbent Diane Deans is running in ward 10 (Gloucester-Southgate). She lost the 2004 federal Liberal nomination in Ottawa South to David McGuinty and the 2007 provincial Liberal nomination in Ottawa Centre to Yasir Naqvi.

*Isabel Metcalfe, wife of Capital Hill Group senior partner Herb, is running in ward 17 (Beacon Hill-Cyrville). In 2006 she ran for the Liberals in Carleton-Mississippi Mills. She was an advisor to Sheila Copps at Heritage Canada and in her 2003 leadership long-shot campaign. In 2006, she backed Bob Rae for leader.

*David Churnushenko is running in ward 17 as well. He was deputy leader of the federal Greens.

*Ward 8 (College) candidate Lynn Hamilton was the provincial NDP candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean in 2007.

*Stephen Blais is running in ward 19 (Cumberland). He used to work at PCO.

*NDP caucus staffer Theresa Kavanagh is running for zone 4 trustee on the OCDSB.

*Pam Fitzgerald is seeking re-election to the OCDSB as zone 5 trustee. She ran for the NDP in the Ottawa West-Nepean provincial by-election this year.

*James C. Parsons is running in ward 5 (West Carleton-March). He was the Progressive Canadian candidate in Ottawa-Vanier in 2006.

*Rainer Bloess, the incumbent in ward 2 (Innes), failed to win the federal Liberal nomination in Ottawa-Orleans for the next election, so he's back on the municipal gravy train.

*Tim Tierney is running in ward 11 (Capital). He was communications director for Terry Kilrea's mayoral bid.

*Marc Roy, current staffer of James Cowan in the Senate, is running in zone 8 for the French public school board. Roy has also worked for Don Boudria, Hélène Scherrer, and Paul Martin.

*Councillor Clive Doucet is running for mayor. In 2008 he donated $300 to NDP MP Paul Dewar.
